The Original Gym group training consists of small classes of up to six, with individualised programming and detailed coaching. By using proven programming methods, our group training approach will take you from A to B. This is the difference between real training, and just getting a workout.
The goal of training is to develop athletic ability and improve musculoskeletal health by improving our strength, mobility and overall ability to move. Our aim is to build an injury-resistant resilient body, improving both your flexibility and strength together, as well as making you leaner, fitter and more athletic.
The series consists of a number of sessions, each with a different focus.
FOUNDATION: Basic body mechanics, Strength and mobility
Most sporting and other life activity takes place on our feet. This program sets the foundation for our movement on the feet, so we can move better and become better athletes on our feet. Our first goals are fundamental body awareness and control of the spine and hip, learning to both brace and move. From there we learn fundamental human movements - squatting, and bending at the hip, before we can build strength, increase flexibility, and develop true athleticism.
BARBELL: Olympic Weightlifting
This is an “intermediate” level session, by invite or application only as there is a prerequisite level of ability required to participate. The focus is on the barbell lifts - squats and olympic lifts, developing lower body strength, power and agility.
MUSCLE UP: “Gymnastic” Upper Body Strength
"Muscle Up" is the name of our upper body strength oriented class. Our upper body strength work is based on fundamental gymnastic and bodyweight based strength exercises - handstands, one arm push ups, chin ups and pull ups and so on. A major milestone in this process is the infamous "muscle up". This move starts from a hanging position on the rings, pulling all the way up and over the rings before pressing up, building strength through a wide range of movement. This is coupled with mobility and structural balance exercises to make you strong, resilient and flexible.
MOVEMENT AND MOBILITY
Our Movement & Mobility class will use progressive range-of-motion development methods to increase your mobility, improve your posture and take the brakes off your athletic ability! Training follows specific blocks, and content varies, but these classes regularly feature loaded stretches, skills development (handstands etc), straight arm strength training and prehab work as well as other movement topics.
Why train in a small group?
Many gyms offer either large classes with little coaching or progression and no individualisation, or expensive personal training. Small group programmed training is our attempt to create the "best of both worlds" - to bring the benefits of personalised programming and coaching to a more affordable and engaging group format. Groups are limited to a maximum of 6 people to ensure a high level of coaching and attention. The sessions follow a set structure, but within that the training programme is individualised and periodised.
How does it work?
Your first few sessions act as an assessment - you advance through various exercises until your current level is reached, from which an individualised training plan (lasting between 4-12 weeks) can be written. The whole group works together but with everyone following individualised programming, maximising your progression and results.
What does "programmed" mean?
Random programming produces random results. The key to making progress and getting real results lies in having a structured approach to training. "Programmed" workouts are pre-written: exactly what weights, sets, repetitions and so on have been pre-determined based on your previous achievements. Most programming is written in blocks, which run anywhere from 4-12 weeks long. By using proven programming methods, our group training approach will take you from A to B. This is the difference between real training, and just getting a workout.
What does a typical session involve?
All sessions include a warm-up, fundamental mobility work, strength development and structural balance exercises designed to prevent the development of imbalances.
Are other group training options available?
